Microsoft partners get reprieve on revenue targets
Microsoft partners have at least another year to figure out if they want to hit new revenue targets to achieve Gold status. Perhaps more important, they now have an inkling of what those revenue targets will be.
Microsoft pushed the deadline back from October 2011 to October 2012. The stated reason is it wants to make sure it has the most accurate measurement system in place.
But many partners suspect the real reason is that there were so many complaints about the requirement that Microsoft had to regroup. The delay was mentioned in a post to the Microsoft Partner Portal in late June and comes just before the big Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference kicks off in Los Angeles next week.
Microsoft unmasks revenue targets
These revenue targets -- based on geography and skill set -- remain a huge issue for Microsoft partners. According to the MPN website, a U.S. partner must hit $100,000 to $500,000 in revenue, depending on competency. A Gold partner with a badge in application integration, volume licensing or Web development, for example, must attain $100,000 in revenue while a CRM Gold ISV has to hit $500,000. In the past there was no revenue requirement, per se.

Citrix makes desktop virtualization secure enough for secret environments
Using desktop virtualization in highly secret environments is very challenging. Desktop systems may only be allowed to communicate with certain servers over certain secure networks. Individuals may be limited to working with data that their role and security clearance allows. In the past, no commercial, off-the-shelf, VDI product was secure enough to satisfy all of the requirements presented by government agencies, contractors and suppliers. Without a great deal of work, commercial products just couldn’t address the network, application and data isolation and access control required.
I had an opportunity to speak with a couple of folks (Peter Blum, Director of Product Management, and Raymond Chew, Senior Product Manager) from Citrix about addressing the security challenges found in enterprises and the extreme requirements found in government agencies. They detailed what sort of work had to be done to make commercial products address that level of security challenge. They also introduced me to XenClient 2 and XenClient XT.
Here’s how Citrix describes the XenClient family of desktop virtualization products
XenClient is a client-side hypervisor that enables virtual desktops to run directly on client devices. By separating the operating system from the underlying hardware, desktop images can now be created, secured, deployed and moved across any supported hardware, greatly reducing the maintenance burden on IT and simplifying disaster recovery for laptop users. Optimized for Intel vPro XenClient delivers the high definition experience that users expect.

Citrix and Microsoft Gain on VMware
VMware has clearly held the top spot in the burgeoning virtualization market, running ahead of competitors Citrix and Microsoft. Yet the race appears to be shifting, reports Paul Rubens.
"What, me worry?" is the signature phrase of Mad Magazine's Alfred E. Neuman. It probably also sums up VMware's reaction to Gartner's latest assessment of the server virtualization market.
VMware dominates this market, and it's long been the only leader, as defined by one of Gartner's famous Magic Quadrants. But the latest Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure report, published last week, adds Microsoft and Citrix to the coveted top-right Leaders section.
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Citrix (NASDAQ: CTXS) are, in other words, catching up with VMware's virtualization technology. "Although market share leader VMware (NYSE: VMW) continues to set the standard in products and the pace in terms of strategy, Microsoft has increased its market share (especially among midmarket customers new to virtualization), and Citrix is leveraging its desktop virtualization strengths and its free XenServer offering to expand its server virtualization share," says the report.
It's no surprise that competition has heated up -- everyone wants a share of the server virtualization bonanza. Right now, about 40 percent of x86 architecture workloads have been virtualized, and the installed base is expected to grow by 500 percent from 2010 to 2015 as the number of workloads grows and virtualization levels reach more than 75 percent, Gartner (NYSE:IT)reckons.

Microsoft, Citrix join VMware at top of Gartner's Magic Quadrant
It's getting harder for VMware to argue that it's the only game in town for big-time virtualization projects.
Sure, every member of the Fortune 100 is a VMware customer, even rival Microsoft. But VMware is no longer the only vendor at the top of the x86 virtualization market, according to Gartner's latest Magic QuadrantIN PICTURES: The hottest virtualization products at VMworld
The prestigious ranking, released last week, places Microsoft and Citrix in the Leaders Quadrant along with VMware. Last year, VMware was listed as the only leader, with its rivals in lower tiers.
Gartner still lists VMware first among the three leaders, with Microsoft second and Citrix third. But given than Microsoft's Hyper-V and Citrix's XenServer are cheaper -- and perhaps nearly as good as VMware -- customers can justifiably seek alternatives. Oracle, Parallels and Red Hat are called niche players in the Gartner ranking.
"Citrix and Microsoft have joined VMware in the Leaders Quadrant by increasing vision and execution respectively," Gartner analyst Thomas Bittman and colleagues write. "Although market share leader VMware continues to set the standard in products and the pace in terms of strategy, Microsoft has increased its market share (especially among midmarket customers new to virtualization), and Citrix is leveraging its desktop virtualization strengths and its free XenServer offering to expand its server virtualization share."
